Zim's Tariro neGitare to headline Women In Music gig in Nairobi
Zimbabwean singer Tariro neGitare will headline a Women In Music concert series event at the Goethe-Institut auditorium in Nairobi, Kenuya, tomorrow.
The concert is organised by jazz musician Christine Kamau in partnership with the German cultural organisation and will also feature Kenyan saxophonist Neema Analo Kanga and singer Valentine Zikki.
Kamau told Music In Africa that since its inception in 2016, the concert series had celebrated and empowered more than 25 women by providing them with a platform to increase their visibility in the music industry.
“There are many gigs in Nairobi and we wanted to curate a platform that would stand out from the rest by primarily shining a light on the great live female performing artists we have in Nairobi,” she said.
“I think there is a lot of pride for women to experience an initiative where they are represented, acknowledged and celebrated. I have also witnessed more unity and support among female artists.”
Kamau said the concert also endeavoured to showcase and promote upcoming female musicians in a male-dominated industry.
“The youngest performers we have hosted are 16-year-old singer Nikita Kering and the 20-year-old year old Kanga, who will be playing tomorrow,” she said. “The artist selection process is never tasking because we receive many requests from female artists who are interested in participating.”
Asked to describe NeGitare’s music, Kamau said: “She is a fantastic singer and guitarist and undoubtedly one of the foremost female artists in Zimbabwe today. She has toured extensively and has a passion and outstanding record for promoting the arts.”
