Tanzanian musician crowned Airtel Trace Music Star winner
Tanzanian musician, Mayunga Andrew Nalimi was on Saturday crowned the overall winner of the Airtel Trace Music Star competition by American icon Akon. Mayunga beat Jitey from Nigeria and Baz from Congo Brazzaville, who came 2nd and 3rd respectively.
According to The Star newspaper, the intense competition saw the Tanzanian faint when his name was announced at the tense occasion. The grand prize earns Mayunga a record deal with Universal Music, which comes with a promotion and mentorship package with a total value of US $ 500, 000.
Mayunga hails from Morogoro in Tanzania, and is the last-born son in his family. His love for music started when he was aged 5, and he has continuously worked at improving his music skills. He lost his father in 2009 and has since depended on the support of his mother to chart his way in the tumultuous music business. He has since recorded his debut track, ‘Break The Rough.’ Winning the Airtel Prize will no doubt send the music career of this committed young musician spiraling to the stars.
