Nanky wins 2021 VGMAs Unsung Award
Highlife singer Nanky has won the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards‘ (VGMAs’) Unsung Award ahead of the main ceremony on 25 and 26 June.
Nanky edged Oseikrom Sikani, Adelaide the Seer, Koby Tuesday, Kwame Yogot, Malcom Nuna, Queendalyn and Naana Blu to win the title previously held by rapper Teflon Flexx.
“A big thank you to the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards and all loyal fans who supported by voting and sharing my works,” Nanky said.
The Unsung category is dedicated to emerging talent in the country, and guarantees the winner a performance slot at the VGMAs awards ceremony.
Nanky’s victory follows his win at the maiden Global Music Awards Africa earlier this year, where his single ‘Favour’ featuring Sarkodie won the Global Best Video of the Year Award. He also won in the New Lord category at the 2021 4syte Music Video Awards.
Signed to Sultan Incorporation, the singer is also behind the singles ‘Happiness’, ‘Quansima’, ‘Remedy’ and ‘Cassette’ featuring King Promise.
“It’s about time we do with highlife what Nigeria has done with Afrobeats,” he said upon the release of ‘Cassette’ in early June. “All we need is to modify and modernise our indigenous sounds for a global appeal as I’ve done with my latest ‘Cassette’ single featuring King Promise”.
Meanwhile, the organisers of the VGMAs will hold the National Music Summit to commemorate World Music Day on 21 June. The event, which forms part of activities heralding the 2021 VGMAs, will aim to foster a broad-based conversation towards the growth of the local music industry. It will also see inductions into the Ghana Music Awards Hall of Fame, as well as the presentation of the VGMA Titan Award to industry veterans and companies including Prof John Collins, composer Kenneth Kwaku Avotri Kafui, Big Ben Productions and former Musicians Union of Ghana boss Sidiku Buari.
Adina, KiDi, Diana Hamilton, Kuami Eugene, Medikal and Sarkodie are up for the coveted Artist of the Year Award at the 22nd VGMAs come this weekend.
