Hanepoot Brass Band
Bio
Hanepoot en sy brasse maak ‘n band: Jannie Hanepoot has been walking around with an acoustic brass band playing south african grooves in his head for years now, but while getting sidetracked by life (and the Hanepoot Big Band) this is where it remained. This year he decided to bite the bullet, wrote some tunes and got some of his favorite musicians together to play them. The result has been pretty awesome, and the Hanepoot Brass Band was born. There are some new originals and some exciting new arrangements of interesting and lesser-known compositions by other south african composers.
Jannie Hanepoot (trombone) from Montagu in the Klein Karoo. In 1983 Jannie Hanepoot found himself at the very beginning of the afrikaans music revolution when James Phillips asked him to play trombone on his groundbreaking Bernoldus Niemand album. He then spent the next decade on the road playing marabi with Ntemi Piliso’s African Jazz Pioneers (out of Dorkay House), mbaqanga with Winston's Jive Mixup and tasting rock & roll in its purest form, delivering a protest against a heavy-handed establishment, as drummer and trombonist with Johannes Kerkorrel's Gereformeerde Blues Band. He then spent 4 years living in Amsterdam, playing jazz, salsa & funk all over Europe. In 2001 he started the pure african jazz Hanepoot Big Band back in Cape Town, of which the Hanepoot Brass Band is a proud off-spring.
Didier Richards (tenor sax) from Southfield. For his sins he plays sax and flute for the South African Navy band (sometimes in exotic places like on a submarine in Moscow). For his love of music he plays in various jazz groups around Cape Town.
Carlton Adams (Trumpet) from Elsiesrivier is brass teacher at St Andrews High and music teacher at Baruch Social Development project connected to the award-winning Klopse troupe Baruch Entertainers. Carlton is currently reading for a B.Mus in jazz performance.
Douglas Armstrong (trumpet) from Mowbray. A renowned composer, "Drugless Lovestrong" ex Honeymoon Suites, Moodphase5ive, coordinates and teaches the music performance course at AFDA film school. Also plays trumpet and guitar with Ottoman Slap.
Duncan Johnson (baritone sax) from Retreat is the sax and ensemble teacher at York Road Primary school and Alexander Stinton High school. He studied jazz arrangement at UCT.
Cheslyn Noble (sousaphone) from Steenberg grew up in a musical family and has been performing since a very young age, notably starting out as ‘voorloper’ for the St. Joseph’s Christmas band at age eleven. He is currently also on sousaphonist for one of Cape Town's well-established Christmas Bands "Wisemen of the East".
Nick Turner (banjo) from Tamboerskloof was coerced into playing banjo for Hanepoot, he was (and still is?) an accomplished singer-songwriter and guitarist, founder member of bands "Sons Of Trout" and "Mikanic", and guitar teacher at Solms-Delta as well as various schools around Cape Town.
Carlo Fabe (percussion) from Mitchells Plain teaches at the IMAD music school and the Solms-Delta Music development project. He’s played with everyone who's anyone on the Cape Jazz scene, currently with...
