Bio
Luyolo Lenga is a visionary composer, author, music arranger, and sound engineer from Mdantsane, South Africa. His work honours the isiXhosa language and heritage, incorporating ancestral sounds from ancient bow and percussion instruments with classical techniques and contemporary music styles.
After graduating from Cape Audio College in 2000, Luyolo established himself as an independent music producer and founded Qangi Qangi Productions. He has released several albums, including Siphiwo Sam (2019) and Sabela (2020), which explore themes of spiritual awakening, social justice, and cultural identity.
Luyolo has collaborated with various artists and bands, and his music has been featured on production music albums, including Traditional South African Folk - Guitars and Bows and Atmospheric Africa – Harps, Bows and a Hand Pan. He has performed at numerous festivals and venues, including the Cape Town Jazz Festival, Grahamstown National Arts Festival, and StageIt (NY Time Square).
Currently, Luyolo is working on his upcoming album, Mvelo, and offers workshops on making and playing indigenous bow instruments. He is driven by a passion for sharing his gift and connecting people with their cultural heritage.
As Luyolo says, "Spirituality is life, and I'm a spirit being before I am an artist. My music aims to introduce or connect you to a higher version of yourself. If it doesn't, then all my efforts are in vain."
