Young stars Nathi and Zonke to join SA legends at annual tribute concert
The organisers of one of the South Africa’s most popular live music festivals, the Moretele Park Tribute Concert, have once against chosen a diverse line-up of the country’s top talent for this year’s edition, set to take place in the capital city of Tshwane on Saturday 3 September.
Now celebrating 19 years, the Tribute Concert has established itself as a platform for the country’s musical legends to share a stage with today’s biggest acts. The organisers, Drakensberg Promotions, are committed to the recent call to action to increase local content as pioneers of a ‘100% local’ event.
Headlining this year’s event for thousands of revellers at Moretele Park in Mamelodi will be popular duo Mafikizolo, this year’s SAMA winners Nathi and Zonke, popular rapper Kwesta and Grammy-winning flautist Wouter Kellerman.
They will be joined by veteran South African jazz musicians Hugh Masekela and Jonas Gwangwa, who recently shared a stage for the historic reunion of the Jazz Epistles (alongside Abdullah Ibrahim), as well as Tshepo Tshola, former frontman of Sankomota. Other legends in the mix at Moretele Park will be the evergreen Babsy Mlangeni, Don Laka and globally renowned singer Letta Mbulu.
The concert will also feature performances by the young talent of the Puisano Jazz Band and the Tshwane Development Band.
It is expected to be memorable day out, particularly following the success of last year’s edition, when artists from across the continent received an enthusiastic welcome from the Moretele Park crowd.
In the run-up to this year’s event, Drakensberg Promotions will host a music business workshop in Pretoria on 27 August. Aimed at musicians and industry practitioners wanting to know more about the business of music, the workshop will bring in key experts to share knowledge, insights and best practice.
