Davido set to release second album
Pop act Davido has said in an interview with British magazine Fact Mag that he will be releasing his second album in 2017.
The ‘Aiye’ singer released his first album, Omo Baba Olowo, in 2012. Since then he has clocked up hit singles, releasing an EP in the closing months of 2016. So far, the EP has seen the release of three singles including songs with US act Tinashe and South Africa’s Nasty C.
Speaking about his previous project, Davido said the tracks on the Son of Mercy EP were selected from an existing set of songs. “Son Of Mercy was a taster,” he said. “I had songs, so many songs. It was like, okay, it’s the end of the year, let’s give the fans some music. I didn’t go in to record it, I just picked songs from what I already had.”
The interview is the latest in a number of Western media articles looking at the contemporary music scene in Africa. Davido was on the cover of US publication Fader last year when he spoke about a possible collaboration with his colleague Wizkid. He was also interviewed by the Washington Post in an article contemplating African pop music in the US. These articles have come in the wake of the artist’s signing to Sony, the global giant under which Davido released Son of Mercy.
There have been reports of several American acts contributing to Davido's second album. Asked about the release date of the album, which has been postponed several times, he said, “By the grace of God, early 2017. First quarter. That’s what we’re looking at,” adding that, “I doubt the singles from the last two years [‘Fans Mi’, ‘Owo Ni Koko’, ‘The Sound’] will be on it. It’s not going to be a regular album with one style, there’s going to be music from all over the world – I’ve been to so many countries recording this album. There’ll be a lot of collabs, a lot of fusion.”
Days after Valentine's Day, Davido has released his first single of the year, a love song titled 'If'. The song, which is produced by Tekno, who scored a hit with the song Pana last year, comes with a video. The single is available on iTunes.
