Nigerian rivals Davido and Wizkid to collaborate
Although fans online and otherwise have craved it for a while, it was the one collaboration that distinctly looked impossible. Not after talk of a supposed rivalry. Two of Nigeria’s biggest names in pop music, Wizkid and Davido, may be coming together for a song—a bit of a coup for their considerably large fan base spread across the continent and beyond.
The possibility of the collaboration was mentioned in an interview David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, granted to US magazine Fader. Before the previously thorny issue of Wizkid was brought up by the magazine’s reporter, Davido discusses a number of topics related to his upbringing, his career and schooling, and the possibility of crossing over to the American market.
Speaking about Wizkid’s and his own dominance of the pop scene, Davido said, “Me and Wizkid, we’re the best. If one telecoms comes to me, the other one will go meet him. If Coke comes to me, Pepsi goes to him. Whether or not it’s true, they make it feel like it can only be one of us. I think there’s enough for all of us to eat, but then sometimes it can feel like only one person will win.”
The rivalry seems to have been doused in December 2015, when a video surfaced online (see below) showing both pop stars at a venue, with Davido singing tunes from the Wizkid catalogue and vice versa. According to the interview, the moment was made possible by Davido who saw a chance to bring on the ‘Ojuelegba’ singer to join him onstage. Thereafter, Wizkid called Davido’s manager asking for a collaboration.
A duet is now a possibility. “We’re gonna give them What a Time to Be Alive—African version,” said Davido referencing the collaborative mixtape released by American stars Drake and Future. Fans of both Nigerian stars would certainly hope it works out.
