Ghana: Rex Omar elected chairman of GHAMRO

In other elections, Ahmed Banda, popularly known as Bandex, retains his position as first vice chairman, while Diana Hopeson, a former president of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), assumes the role of second vice chair.

Rex Omar had quit his position on the board of GHAMRO in 2013, citing a lack of transparency and professionalism in the running of the board, among other things, as reasons for resigning in a letter addressed to the board.

Following a series of controversies, the Human Rights Court ordered the board led by Carlos Sakyi to step aside In 2014. Kojo Antwi was then sworn into office in February 2015 to serve a two-year term as chairman. Before the election, Antwi had expressed support for either candidate. 

“Well, I believe Rex, who is my brother [and] Nana Tuffour who was my vice are capable of handling the affairs of GHAMRO when any of them is elected as the new chairman," he said in an interview on Kasapa 102.5FM. "It’s only composers who can chair the organisation.”

The election of the new board took place on 8 March 2017, with 13 members chosen to lead the organisation after the departure of the Kojo Antwi-led board.
