The Weeknd donates $100 000 to Ugandan clinic
Canadian singer and songwriter The Weeknd has donated $100 000 (350 million Ugandan shillings) to the Suubi Health Centre, a maternity and children’s medical facility in Budondo, Uganda, to help fund a new clinic.
This after American hip hop artist French Montana nominated him to make donations to help pay for the new maternity centre. Montana pledged $100 000 for the purchase of ambulances, incubators, cribs and a blood bank for the Suubi community.
Montana came to know of the challenges facing the community during a visit to shoot his ‘Unforgettable’ music video in March, when he met the founders of the Suubi centre as well as other community members including new mothers.
The health centre goes through many challenges as it serves about 56 000 people who have little or no knowledge on reproductive health. The success of this project will see the women, children and community as a whole enjoy improved and professional healthcare services.
Montana has been spreading the word through his #UnforgettableDanceChallenge video which is seen as a “call to action to raise awareness for the needs of Suubi and the people of Uganda”.
The video, which has more than 10 million views on YouTube, features Ugandan dancers Triplets Ghetto Kids, a troupe of underprivileged children who have used their street dancing skills to help their families. The dance challenge has seen American celebrities like DJ Khaled, Drake and P Diddy, among others, take part.
