TikTok to launch StemDrop collabo tool

Described as “a groundbreaking new evolution in global music collaboration, curation and artist discovery”, StemDrop will provide TikTok creators around the world with ‘stems’ from new music releases, allowing them to produce their own versions.

The tool is the brainchild of entertainment executives including Simon Cowell and Tim Van Rongen. It is purposed to act as an incubator for new talent, artistry and creativity by giving artists and music makers the opportunity to collaborate with the best songwriters in the world.

“Hit songs are like diamonds and they can change an artist’s career overnight,” Cowell said at the launch of StemDrop. “With tens of thousands of songs uploaded every day, this idea will give aspiring artists the opportunity to collaborate with some of the most successful songwriters in the world.”

UMG chairperson and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge said: “UMG exists at the intersection of innovation and talent discovery, so we’re excited to partner with Simon and the incredible team he’s assembled to launch this new platform, harnessing the scale of TikTok to leverage the artistry of creators worldwide.”

Supported by Samsung, the new tool will feature the StemDrop Mixer on TikTok where creators will get to experiment with individual effects, harmonies and melodies to create and upload their own unique song versions.

Prolific songwriters Max Martin, Savan Kotecha and Ali Payami will be releasing a version of a brand-new single for the first StemDrop on 26 October, when the TikTok creator community will be able to access stems such bass guitar, vocals parts and drums.
