Ghanaian stars to headline African Legends Night concert
Now in its 10th year, the event, scheduled for the Grand Arena at the Accra International Conference Centre, celebrates African music icons while shining the spotlight on the continent’s rich and diverse musical cultures.
Speaking at the media launch on Wednesday, Ernest Boateng, who heads the event’s organiser Global Media Alliance (GMA), said the programme was born out of a vision to create “a premium pan-African concert that truly celebrates music legends.”
New additions to this year’s celebrations are the African Legends Hall of Fame and the African Legends Digital Museum.
Ghana Tourism Authority CEO Akwasi Agyeman noted that music tourism has become a major global trend, allowing people to experience and enjoy the diverse cultural offerings across the continent. He lauded the organisers for the initiative which, since its establishment, has featured over 20 other headliners and close to 50 performances.
Notable African headliners over the years have included South African greats Hugh Masekela and Yvonne Chaka Chaka. Others are Daddy Lumba, Kojo Antwi and Gyedu-Blay Ambulley from Ghana, Femi Kuti and 2Baba Idibia (Nigeria), Awilo Longomba and Kanda Bongoman (DRC) and Freddy Meiway (Ivory Coast).
“These legends have played major shows, won multiple awards both locally and internationally and have given masterpiece performances that have created indelible marks in the hearts and minds of the audience,” GMA head of events Jerry Ofori said.
