Call for applications: Afro Queens recording camp in Nigeria
Applications are currently ongoing for the inaugural Afro Queens Recording Camp in Nigeria.
The brainchild of UK-based music agency Afrolit, the annual initiative seeks to celebrate and sustain the growing participation of women within the global music ecosystem by fostering knowledge-sharing among budding female musicians and producers. Specifically, it looks to maximise the music discovery ecosystem in sub-Saharan Africa while creating a safe haven for women creatives.
By bringing together talented female musicians and producers through workshops, mentorship programmes and access to industry professionals, Afro Queens aims to create an empowering and supportive community that nurtures creativity and collaboration.
Set in Lagos, Nigeria, the maiden Afro Queens Class will feature a virtual contest where 12 winners emerge as the inaugural set of acts to create the Afro Queens Vol. 1 EP, under the tutelage of Afro Queens’ resident producer Dunnie.
Apart from free sessions with Dunnie, the Afro Queens Class of 2023 will receive free mentorship and consultancy, as well as free distribution and promotion. It will also be a direct beneficiary of royalties from the project.
To participate, prospective entrants are required to register for the competition here before 30 June.
Successful applicants will be unveiled on 6 August after which the main recording camp and workshops will be rolled out.
“We understand the terrain now, and how rigid, costly, and chauvinist it could be,” Afrolit founder and Afro Queens director of operations Christiana Balogun said. “We want more women in music, and it’s really about getting started by helping the existing queens who are working really hard to promote themselves.”
