Zim: Two Insimbi ZeZhwane band members killed in car accident
The Zimbabwean music industry is mourning the deaths of two Insimbi ZeZhwane rumba band members who died in a car accident on the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls highway on 5 August.
Co-founder and lead singer Elvis ‘MaEli’ Mathe and drummer Thembinkosi ‘Maviri’ Mpofu were killed while returning from a performance in Binga District. According to local media, four members sustained injuries and are recovering in different hospitals. The Zimbabwean government has since pledged to cover all medical and funeral costs.
“The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Elvis Mathe and Thembinkosi Mpofu,” NACZ director Nicholas Moyo said. “Our sympathies also extend to all the band members’ families who have been affected by this untimely and unfortunate situation. The NACZ wishes the remaining band members a speedy recovery.”
Local singer Andrea The Vocalist wrote on social media: “We express our deep sorrow for the loss of Insimbi ZeZhwane’s lead vocalist and lead guitarist, Elvis ‘MaEli’ Mathe. MaEli’s departure is a significant loss to our arts community. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, bandmates, and the entire Insimbi ZeZhwane family during this difficult time.”
Veteran journalist Ezra Sibanda wrote: “I remember when this talented group performed at our official opening of Pata Pata Sports Bar last December. They were just excellent to watch, great performers and exceptional on stage. MaEli my dear brother, we will carry you in our hearts forever, your absence will leave a void that will never be filled. Though you have gone my guy, your legacy will remain forever and will cherish the memories you left for us. You were a man of grace and strength, great vocalist and multi-talented artist.”
Insimbi ZeZhwane was co-founded by MaEli and lead guitarist Meluleki ‘Brema’ Moyo. The duo started recording in 2015 and have released seven albums including Iseqa Mgwaqo, Inhlanzi Encane, Sizalendaba, Dikidiki, Inganekwane, Impande yeMinyela and Imbemba. The group was based in South Africa before moving back to Bulawayo early this year.
