BANTU drops Lagos Barbie video
Nigerian band BANTU has released the video for ‘Lagos Barbie’, the first single off its new album Agberos International.
At the album release session held months ago, the band’s leader Ade Bantu had talked about the nature of the song. “It is a tongue in cheek track,” he said. “A serious Lagos Barbie won't wave her weave in the air [as the chorus demands]. We just want people to have fun, just have a good time.”
The video, directed by Bolaji Kekere-Ekun, retains the tongue-in-cheek spirit of the song. As a statement from the band says, “The playful visuals follow a hair obsessed lady who unwittingly finds herself time travelling through several decades [as she tries] to get her hair weave fixed.”
The video features rising Nigerian actress Nengi Adoki in the lead role. Members of the 13-piece BANTU collective appear throughout the video, serenading the lady and following her through the decades.
"We are aware of the absurdity of this message," says Ade Bantu who plays a barber in the video, "but we also know that the lyrics…will make everyone pause and think, 'hold on, wait a minute. Did I just hear right?'"
'Lagos Barbie' is available at the band's website and on other digital platforms. Watch the video below:
