Botswana: Hotstix to perform for late friend
South African jazz saxophonist Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse will play a tribute show for the late Ray Phiri at the Mascom Live Sessions in Gaborone, Botswana, on 25 August. The show will be Mabuse’s first in Botswana this year.
The organisers of the event said they had been trying to book the musician for some time. “Due to logistics and bookings clashing, it was always a flop but this time around we managed to book him to come and perform,” promoter Robin Chivazve said, adding that the event would honour the legacy of Ray Phiri.
Mabuse is expected to perform classic songs such as the 1985 hit ‘Let’s Get It On’ and 1986 favourite ‘Jive Soweto’.
Local hip hop artist ATI (Batho Bame) will open the show. Speaking about the generational gap between the two artists, Chivazve said: “He is hot. He is the main man. That’s why we selected him to open for Hotstix despite the age difference. Let’s hope they get to work together and create magic.”
The Mascom Live Sessions, which were first held in April 2015, take place at the Botswanacraft live venue in Botswana’s capital. Other South African artist who have headlined the show include Mafikizolo, Ringo and Freshlyground.
The show took a three-month hiatus this year after it was put on pause for the winter season.
