Call for applications: 2023 Human Rights Festival in South Africa
South African creatives involved in the promotion of justice and freedom are invited to submit applications for the 2023 edition of Human Rights Festival that will be held on Constitution Hill in Johannesburg later this year.
The call is open to artists, filmmakers, writers, performers and poets who use creative talent and skills to raise awareness about issues that matter and to inspire change. Central to the festival is the concept of Artivism – social and political activism through art.
Interested creatives should submit an application via email at: lesole@conhill.org.za.
“Artivism at the Human Rights Festival takes many forms, from music, visual arts, performance, film, poetry and more,” the organisers said. “We are finalising our programme of events for this year’s festival, and we might have room for you.”
Last year the festival coincided with Human Rights Day in South Africa and featured music performances, exhibitions, film, poetry and theatre. Some of the artists who performed include Solidarity Express, Ms Party and Vusi Mahlasela.
About the festival and venue
The Human Rights Festival is one of the signature events at Constitution Hill that is designed to uphold the culture of human rights. Its location on Constitution Hill is symbolic as it tells the story of South Africa’s journey to democracy – a former prison and military fort which once saw the incarceration of Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu and, today, is home to the country’s Constitutional Court. Constitution Hill is also a place of contrasts: of injustice and justice, of oppression and liberation. The precinct is testament to the importance of preserving sites of atrocity for posterity, and to recreating them so that they can serve the purposes of the present and mould the future.
