
Call for applications: East Africa travel grant
The British Council’s East Africa Arts programme is accepting applications for its East Africa in Motion travel grant.
- Kenyan percussionist Kasiva Mutua received the East Africa in Motion travel grant in 2018.
The grant supports East Africa-based artists, cultural practitioners, researchers and curators as well as art groups/collectives and organisation looking to create new connections between the countries of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Sudan and South Sudan.
Successful applicants will be able to travel across national borders and collaborate with new communities.
East Africa Arts accepts applications all year round. Individuals can apply at any time but grant reviews can take up to two months.
Note that the application should describe at least one community/person/organisation that the applicant will connect to in the host location they are traveling to.
Eligibility criteria
To qualify for this travel grant, applicants must:
- Show generous and innovative ways of sharing their travel experience with others, both online and offline.
- Demonstrate a clear connection to how this travel experience will support their artistic practice.
- Exhibit an interest in community building and connections between artists and art sectors in East Africa
How to apply
To apply, interested individuals must produce a three-minute video and fill in the online application form answering the following questions:
- Where do you want to go, why and what will you do when you’re there?
- How will you share your journey with others?
- What are the dates for travel?
The video created must be uploaded either on YouTube or Vimeo and the link pasted in the application form.
Financial support
The British Council’s East Africa in Motion travel grant will offer up to £1 000 ($1 200) per person and up to £5 000 per collective/group/organisation.
