Call for applications: Steenberg High School head of music in Cape Town
Musiquelaine South Africa (MSA) is inviting experienced candidates to submit applications for the head of music vacancy at Steenberg High School in Cape Town.
The organisation’s primary objective is to build a long-term, sustainable music development programme from primary to tertiary level, thereby creating opportunities for young learners beyond their academic curriculum and contributing to a holistic education.
The successful candidate will lead the band and manage a small staff complement during a transitionary growth phase. He or she will provide strategic and operational leadership to the music programme and be responsible for all aspects of management including practical and theoretical music education, conducting rehearsals and concerts, hosting music tuition specialising in brass, education workshops, learner and staff wellness, stakeholder partnerships, reporting, M&E and logistics.
The candidate will report to the programme manager and the position is an initial one-year contract, on a full-time basis. Candidates will need to clearly demonstrate they have the necessary experience, leadership, communication and diplomatic skills with which to manage a music education programme in a challenging socio-economic environment.
Expected qualities of the suitable candidate regarding:
Teaching
- To engage in class teaching, foster purposeful progression in learning, consistent with the learning areas and programmes as determined.
- To prepare lessons considering orientation, regional courses, new approaches, techniques, evaluation, aids, etc. in the field.
- To take leadership role in respect of the subject and learning area or phase.
- To plan, co-ordinate, control, administer, evaluate, and report on learners’ academic progress.
- To recognise that learning is an active process and be prepared to use a variety of strategies to meet the outcomes of the organisation.
- To establish an environment which stimulates positive learning and to actively engage learners in the learning process.
- To consider and utilise learners’ own experience as a fundamental and valuable resource.
Additional
- To co-ordinate and control all academic activities under your umbrella of responsibilities.
- To control and co-ordinate stock and equipment which is used and required.
- To perform or assist in other non-teaching administrative duties to enable the organisation to function within a school environment, with safety protocols in place.
- To assist the Board in identifying and solving serious and other matters.
- To assist the Board in overseeing learner counselling and guidance, careers, discipline and the general welfare of all learners.
Requirements
- A tertiary level music qualification.
- Documented previous experience within the music education sector.
- Excellent leadership skills and demonstrated experience in managing a team.
- Proven proficiency in MS Office, other IT platforms and online navigation skills.
- Strong organisational, interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong decision-making skills, attention to detail and urgency of action.
- Previous experience in the social development sector would be an advantage.
- Commitment to the vision, mission, and values of the organisation.

Remuneration: R15 000 (about $840) per month.
