Award-winning songwriters and producers, Cobhams Asuquo from Nigeria, David “King David” Muthami from Kenya and Etivaldo Victorino aka Ellputo from Mozambique have joined forces to create the song that is intended to inspire the youth of Africa to know the power they hold as active citizens in their communities.
The song will be performed by A-list artists from across the African continent and will include a verse crowd sourced from the public. The resulting track will be the first of its kind for Africa and a major asset for the Global Goals campaign, which aims to promote the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals around the world. Winning participants stand a chance to win $500 and be credited alongside Cobhams Asuquo and King David as a fellow songwriter.
“The brief was a challenging one,” says David Muthamia about the competition. “But crowdsourcing lyrics add another layer of depth and truth to making what we expect to be Africa’s next big hit.”
Noting the power that music has on people, Cobhams says this of the song: “Music has the power to change minds and unify people. I’m excited to be adding this truly African song to the Global Goals campaign. The project is something I couldn’t resist getting involved in.”
In September 2015, the United Nations will launch 17 global goals, a series of targets to end extreme poverty, fight inequality and tackle climate change for everyone by 2030. The track will be released on Friday, 4 September by Universal Music. To enter, visit the competition's website.
