Call for registrations: Young Women Composers workshops
Young Women Composers (YWC) in Philadelphia, US, is organising a free workshop series and young African female musicians are encouraged to register.
YWC seeks to amplify the voices of young women, allow them access to a high level of musical training, close the gender gap in the music composition field, and create a more equitable music sector.
The workshop will feature prominent and exciting voices in new music today. The series will run from 29 June to 30 July.
Some of the topics to be discussed include:
- Cultivating inclusivity in your personal and professional life.
- Exploring sampling with Ableton Live.
- The process of commissioning and collaboration.
The workshop series is divided into two streams:
The Process
These sessions include the presentations on the compositional process, from sketches to final product. Presentations will be made by Kate Soper (associate professor of music, Smith College), Vivian Fung (composition faculty, Santa Clara University) and Angélica Negrón (PhD candidate in composition, The Graduate Center, CUNY). Others include Nina C Young (assistant professor of composition, USC Thornton School of Music) and Pamela Z, a composer, performer and media artist working with voice, live electronic processing, sampled sound, and video.
Artistry in 2020
These sessions will include presentations by entrepreneurs and change-makers in the new music scene. Presentations will be made by Aiden Feltkamp (emerging composers and diversity director, American Composers Orchestra), Eve O’Donnell (artistic producer to the artistic director, National Sawdust), Sarah Williams (new works director, Opera Philadelphia), Claire Chase (founder and flautist, International Contemporary Ensemble) and Gabriela Lena Frank (founder and director, Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music).
