Call for upcoming musicians: Thomas Mapfumo Peace Tour 2018
The Chimurenga Music Company & Entertainment Republic (CMCER) is calling on upcoming musicians interested in supporting Zimbabwean chimurenga musician Thomas 'Mukanya' Mapfumo during his peace tour. Tour dates are yet to be finalised but the first show will be held in Gweru in the first week of December.
The tour comes after August's harmonised elections that saw soldiers kill six civilians.
The call is intended for upcoming musicians in Gweru, Bulawayo, Beitbridge, Masvingo, Mutare, Kariba, Victoria Falls and Harare.
The Dr Thomas Mapfumo Peace Tour 2018 is designed to encourage Zimbabwean citizens to put their differences aside and work together. After the Gweru show, the ‘Hokoyo’ singer will perform in the above-mentioned cities respectively.
Interested artists should submit an expression of interest and the band’s profile to info@entrepublic.com.
The deadline for applications is 9 November (12pm).
“The peace tour seeks to promote peace and unity in a polarised society which has been deeply divided by politics,” CMCER spokesperson Blessing Vava told Music In Africa. “It comes against a background of many historical processes that our country experienced.
"We have gone through the war, Gukurahundi, the 2008 violence and many phases but there has not been a peace and reconciliation process and that’s where Mukanya is coming in. Even the government has acknowledged this by operationalising the Peace and Reconciliation Commission.”
Vava said the tour was an opportunity for artists who wanted to grow their careers.
"It's a way of accommodating those with less exposure and promote upcoming musicians who never get the chance to perform at such a stage. Our target is not the so-called big artists. I should emphasise that this is a tour for those without opportunites and those who are sidelined,” he said.
