Children's musical to bring Dr Seuss characters to life at Joburg Theatre
Seussical by American playwright Lynn Ahrens and composer Stephen Flaherty will be staged at the Joburg Theatre in South Africa from 9 March to 28 April.
Seussical is a portmanteau of ‘Seuss’ and ‘musical’ and is based on Dr Seuss' children's stories. The musical draws its characters from a number of his books and is filled with non-stop music, laughter and feel-good fun.
“The People's Theatre [at the Joburg Theatre] strives to educate younger minds in order to create a stronger generation through the medium of theatre,” theatre directors Jill Girard and Keith Smith said in a statement. “It is fun to have fun but you have to know how. This is our motivation in directing this marvellous production.
“We have combined the funniest stories and craziest Dr Seuss creatures in this unique blend of rhyme, rhythm and sensational music score. Dr Seuss is bound to appeal to children of all ages and abilities encouraging them to think and be creative. Oh, the places this show will take your imagination.”
Among the many characters featured in the musical, the Cat in the Hat and the Sour Kangaroo will be played by Katlego Nche and Megan Spencer respectively. The pair is expected to bring their wit and charm to these well-known characters.
“Audiences should expect the unexpected but they will definitely fall in love with this cat,” Nche said.
Musical artist Luciano Zuppa is expected to showcase his wide-ranging theatre experience in the character of Horton the elephant. Actress and musician Masego Mothibakgomo will play the character of a shy bird Gertrude Mcfuzz while theatre artist Nonhlanhla Mkhonto will play the bubbling Mayzie LaBird. Another artist, Thokozani Jiyane, who charmed in the musical Annie Jr, returns to the Peoples Theatre as Mr Mayor.
