DJs Union of Ghana launches pension fund for members
The DJs Union of Ghana (DJUGA), a labour alliance for professional disc jockeys, has announced a partnership with Axis Pension Trust to oversee a welfare scheme for its members.
- Merqury Quaye says the development signifies a positive shift for DJs in Ghana.
The news was made public during the Ghana DJ Clinic workshop in Accra at the weekend. The scheme is the first of its kind for the DJ community in the country.
DJUGA said the initiative aligned with its core aim of catering to the welfare, education and general well-being of DJs, as well as complementing the efforts of the Ghana DJ Awards to offer a platform to promote DJs.
Axis Pension Trust is among the largest private pension providers in Ghana, offering a range of products including personal pension schemes, group pension schemes, multi-employer pension schemes and investment annuity plans. The company currently administers more than 250 000 individual accounts with assets under administration exceeding $500m.
“This is a great time to be alive and to see all the major developments happening in the DJ culture in Ghana,” Ghana DJ Awards organiser Merqury Quaye told Music In Africa. “A lot of people may not have believed it if they were told that in 2022 there will be a pension scheme for DJs. It is really exciting and heartwarming and I am happy to be at the forefront of championing the welfare of DJs and the development of the culture.”
Quaye added that the partnership signified a positive shift in the general perception of the craft, which he observed didn’t enjoy a positive reputation about a decade ago. “DJs are now getting endorsements and are becoming influencers and that’s a great development,” he said.
Meanwhile, the 2022 Ghana DJ Clinic, which ran under the theme, Reimagine Your Career assembled emerging and established music selectors in seminars tailored toward helping them build brand equity and harness the latest digital tools to elevate their craft. Speakers at the event included creative entrepreneur Sadiq Abdulai-Abu, marketing expert Nana Yaa Amoah-Owusu, music producer Frank ‘Master Que’ Ofori Nyarko and Multimedia Group digital experience lead Kobby ‘Spiky’ Nkrumah.
The programme was facilitated by Merqury Republic, organiser of the annual Ghana DJ Awards, and forms part of activities connected to the event, which will be held at the Silver Star Towers in Accra on 5 November.
