Ghana: Black Sherif surpasses 300 million streams on Boomplay
Africa-facing music streaming service Boomplay has honoured Black Sherif with a plaque for amassing 300 million streams on the platform – the most by a Ghanaian musician.
The musician powered to the milestone with his debut album The VIllain I Never Was, released in October 2022, which is now the most streamed Ghanaian album on Boomplay. Black Sherif surpassed 100 million streams on the platform in September 2022.
“It takes a village and everyone’s effort,” Black Sherif said. “I am very grateful to you guys for your energy, support and streaming. I do appreciate this so much. I used to make music not knowing what would come of it. From that to the accolades and receiving this new plaque have been nothing but mind-blowing. I love and appreciate the fans for being there for me and the music I create. This one is for them. My gratitude also goes to Boomplay for continuously supporting my journey.”
Boomplay’s communications and public relations manager, Paul Azumah-Ayitey, said: “Having played an important role in Black Sherif’s emergence and success story, Boomplay is always proud of his achievements and the new ground he keeps breaking. His meteoric rise has been phenomenal and a testament to his great talent and potential.
“Boomplay is committed to providing an enabling platform for African artists to unlock their potential and grow their audience, and we will make sure we are right by their side to celebrate every milestone along the journey.”
Born Mohammed Ismail Sherif, the 21-year-old musician won the coveted Artist of the Year Award at the 2023 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards. He has been nominated for 13 awards at the Ghana Music Awards UK later this year.
Ahead of his upcoming 2023 sophomore album, Black Sherif released on 10 August a two-track single titled Take Care of Yourself Blacko.
