Ghana: Stonebwoy’s Blessing reaches 1 million views in a day
The video for Afro-dancehall star Stonebwoy’s latest single ‘Blessing’ amassed more than 1 million views within 24 hours of its release on 16 April, making him the fastest Ghanaian act to reach a million YouTube views.
The song, released on the singer’s independent label Burniton Music Group, features US rapper of Ghanaian heritage Vic Mensa, who appears on the project courtesy of Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Entertainment. It was produced by Kaywa, with the accompanying video directed by Denzel Williams.
‘Blessing’ is themed around celebrating one’s gains and the power in prophesying good things for himself. It follows Stonebwoy’s other 2021 releases including ‘1GAD’ and the ‘We Move’ freestyle.
“New record set again,” Stonebwoy tweeted in celebration of the historic feat. “1 million+ in 24hours after release.”
Stonebwoy’s achievement means that he topples drill act Yaw Tog, who previously held the record. Last month, the rapper, who was recently named BET Amplified International Artist for April, became the first Ghanaian rapper to reach 1 million YouTube streams in three days. He accomplished this with the remix of his breakthrough song ‘Sore’, which features Kwesi Arthur and Ghanaian-British rapper Stormzy.
On Monday, the video for ‘Blessing’ exceeded 1.6 million views on YouTube. ‘Blessing’ is also expected to herald a new album from Stonebwoy, whose last full-length project Anloga Junction was released in April last year.
Meanwhile, Stonebwoy last month won the trophies for Best Male Artist and Album of the Year at the Entertainment Achievement Awards and the Global Reggae/Dancehall Song of the Year Award at the inaugural Global Music Awards Africa. Additionally, the ‘Enku Lenu’ hitmaker won the Highlife Song of the Year, Album of the Year and Viral Song of the Year Awards at the 2021 3Music Awards. Stonebwoy also appears on Jamaican musician’s Sean Kingston’s latest album Live N Livin.
