Ghana's Wendy Shay to hold virtual concert in support of UN SDGs
Ghanaian pop singer Wendy Shay has announced a virtual benefit concert that will take place on 31 July.
Christened the Survival Concert, the event aims to raise funds for her non-profit, the Shay Foundation, which was founded in 2019 to aid the less privileged and support the government’s efforts in meeting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of no poverty and zero hunger.
Speaking to Music In Africa, a representative of Rufftown Records, to which the singer is signed, said that since her days as a nurse in Germany, Wendy Shay has had the needy at heart, for which reason the Shay Foundation has embarked on multiple projects in the area of poverty alleviation.
"The current COVID-19 pandemic has proven to be a huge hurdle in our quest to end poverty, but our artist is relentless in contributing her quota to the vision. No one deserves to suffer," the representative said.
Wendy Shay has opted to hold the concert virtually due to COVID-19 restrictions on social gatherings, citing health and safety concerns, which she implored the general public to be mindful of.
"We chose to hold a virtual concert because we cannot endanger the lives of our patrons. Again, we as a label are keen on abiding by safety protocols instructed by government in the wake on the pandemic."
The 24-year-old Wendy Shay is the author of multiple hit singles and the Shay on You album. Since her foray into music two years ago, she has enjoyed uninterrupted presence on Ghana’s pop scene.
The Survival Concert will be streamed live via Kri8.
