Ghana's Wiyaala celebrates International Women's Day
Ghanaian singer Wiyaala has released a single celebrating the African woman.
Released to commemorate this year's International Women’s Day, the song is titled ‘She’s A Woman’ and has received a visual treatment.
“The song is intended to commend the lives of everyday African women,” Wiyaala said. “I want the world to see we are as capable, strong, energetic and as joyous as our sisters around the world. We are also part of the conversation that aspires to peace, equality and the opportunity to live in a stable world where all women get a fair chance in life.”
The song was written and composed by Wiyaala and Melissa van der Spuy and produced at South Africa's Sunset Recording Studios. The video was directed by the artist herself and produced by Djimba World Productions. It sees several women from Funsi, the community where Wiyaala was raised and resides still, engage in their routine activities.
The video could be seen as part of the artist's desire to bring the cultural spotlight to her region. Last year, she hosted an event she created, the Djimba World Festival, in Funsi and helped bring some attention to the area. She did something similar recently when she welcomed the Ghana Dance Ensemble to Funsi.
This time, the aim, the award-winning artist said online, was to "help promote the ensemble's tradition of finding young, talented artists from different regions of Ghana and training them to express local dance forms to an international audience".
