Earlier this year, the two artists started working on an indie jazz track that initially held a different meaning altogether. Little did they know that it would possess such a deep reflection of the current times, marked by ongoing protests in Kenya against the government.
The result of their collaboration is a track that serves as a poignant reflection of the human experience. ‘Iro ma Mwoch’, which translates to ‘smoke that thunders’ in Dholuo is a powerful metaphor for rainfall, symbolising the very essence of life itself.
Through evocative imagery and a rich tapestry of sound, Zalali and M. Rumbi guide listeners on an emotional journey that explores themes of resilience, struggle, and hope. M. Rumbi’s intricate guitar and bass arrangements provide a rich foundation for Zalali’s soulful vocals to soar, creating a mesmerising soundscape that invites the listener to immerse themselves in the song’s enchanting atmosphere.
The lyrics tell a compelling story, where tears flow and ants emerge as unlikely symbols of strength, showcasing the duo’s ability to craft a narrative that feels both personal and universal. ‘Iro ma Mwoch’ stands as a testament to Zalali and M. Rumbi’s creative prowess, as they seamlessly blend indie folk and jazz influences to elevate the song’s thematic exploration of the human condition.
“We wanted to create a track that would resonate deeply with our listeners, exploring the complexities of life through the lens of our unique musical styles,” Zalali said. “Working with M. Rumbi has been an incredible experience, and we’re thrilled to share this special collaboration with the world.”
Michael Rumbi, better known as M. Rumbi, is a multi-talented artist hailing from Nairobi, Kenya, and currently based in Bloemfontein, South Africa. His musical journey has evolved significantly, with a year-long project culminating in the release of 28 songs, two more than planned. Earlier this year, he released his first EP, Whispers of the Soul, featuring four tracks.
Zalali, meanwhile, is a Nairobi-based creative known for her distinct and captivating tonal voice. Although she began singing in her formative years, it was during the transformative period of the COVID-19 pandemic that she fully embraced her passion for music. Her debut EP, RUDI, marks a significant milestone in her artistic journey.
Describing her sound as “energy in motion”, Zalali’s music reflects her vibrant spirit with a hint of ‘old soul’. She loves exploring various genres and styles, often incorporating rich vocal harmonies to resonate deeply with her listeners.
With a playful approach to her craft, she considers herself a shapeshifting storyteller, drawing inspiration from her life experiences. Her writing is heavily influenced by the sounds of the late '90s and early 2000s, paying homage to musical legends like Khadja Nin, Aaliyah, Mpho Sebina, Sona Jobarteh, Sanaipei Tande, and Evanescence.
