Kenya’s Liboi and SA’s Silvva release African Child single
Kenyan multidisciplinary artist Liboi and South African producer Silvva have released a joint single titled ‘African Child’.
The song is available for streaming and download on major digital platforms.
‘African Child’, whose release date coincides with the International Day of the African Child, celebrates the resilience and strength of African children. The single seeks to raise awareness about the challenges faced by children across the continent and inspire positive change, with the chorus stating “sisi ni kizazi kipya”, Swahili for we are the new generation.
Liboi’s soulful vocals and Silvva’s production skills come together to affirm one common message and create a powerful, catchy track that also champions the beauty of the continent and advocates for equality of its people.
“It's basically about Pan-Africanism and appreciating who we are as Africans,” Liboi said. “In the lyrics, I am reminding Africans to appreciate who we are because we are strong, full of tomorrow’s potential and equally deserving of education and other opportunities.”
Silvva said the making of the project was a rewarding experience as Liboi is fully involved and very passionate about what she does.
“I had just finished watching the movie Beast by Idris Elba on Netflix and l couldn't get my mind off its soundtrack ‘N'na Duniyaa’ by Sona Jobarteh,” Silvva said.
“So I started having ideas of creating a slightly similar sound but fusing it with Afro-house/Afro-tech which is my primary genre of production, so I reached out to a friend whom I have worked with on a couple of tracks, Olivia Ambani, in search of a vocalist who can sing in Swahili and play the guitar and she introduced me to Liboi. The rest is history.”
Liboi, who recently returned from a music residency at Nafasi Art Space in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, says working with Silvva is a dream come true and a sonic bridge to inspire more collaborations among African artists.
