Open Call: University of Johannesburg 2026 Artists in Residence programme

This prestigious programme invites artist-academics from diverse creative disciplines to undertake residencies that produce high-impact artistic outputs aligned with academic standards.

Who should apply

UJ welcomes applications from both emerging and established artists from around the world, particularly those with a connection to Africa. The programme is open to individuals working in:

• Music
• Visual arts and fine arts
• Theatre
• Performance and dance
• Design
• Film and television
• Literary arts

Eligibility criteria

To be considered, applicants must:

• Hold a relevant post-school qualification.
• Not be affiliated with any other tertiary institution in South Africa.

Residency expectations and creative output

Successful applicants will be required to complete at least one creative output project during the residency:

• 12 months for most disciplines.
• 24 months for Film & Television and Literary Arts.

All projects must meet the Department of Higher Education and Training’s (DHET) standards for creative output.

Stipend and residency conditions

• Artists will receive a monthly stipend of R10 000 (subject to statutory deductions).
• The programme does not include additional funding for travel, accommodation, or per diems.
• Residencies may be conducted remotely or on site, subject to limited availability of studios, offices, rehearsal, or performance spaces.

Information sessions

To assist prospective applicants, Pieter Jacobs, Head of the Division of Arts & Culture at UJ, will host two virtual information sessions:

• 25 June 2025 from 2pm to 3pm.
• 2 July 2025 from 2pm to 3pm.

These sessions offer an opportunity to gain valuable insight into the programme and ask questions directly to the UJ Arts & Culture team.

Selection process

Residencies are awarded through a rigorous and competitive academic process, assessing applicants based on:

• Artistic and academic track record.
• Research and creative productivity.
• Academic writing experience.
• Strength and clarity of the residency proposal.
