SA: MTV Base finds new VJ
The MTV Base VJ Search came to a close on Sunday with Tshego Mosupye emerging triumphant above fellow competitors Kuhle Adams and Gontse Makgoba.
The 26 year old, who hails from South Africa’s capital Tshwane, was among 8 000 hopefuls who entered the televised competition.
“It's not only about the links and swag, there is a higher responsibility about how we serve our fans,” Mosupye said after he was announced as the winner. “As a VJ one must be fully aware of what's happening in the streets and current affairs in relation to the music.”
The victory will now see Mosupye attend international award ceremonies and mingle with established artists in the entertainment industry. He also walked away with an Edgars Active voucher valued at R20 000 ($1 500) and accessories from Jabari.
“I am thrilled and humbled to share the stage with an iconic brand as MTV Base, a channel that is always ahead of our time and always shifting youth culture. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow – the possibilities for me are endless,” Mosupye said.
The new MTV Base VJ also spoke about what he likes doing in his spare time. “I love fitness – one of the methods I reached out to break free from my bout of depression. I read and I love creating and designing clothes.”
The category head of sponsor Breezer, Anshuman Goenka, said: “Tshego showed what it means to truly live your life in colour. He was a real fighter who would never give up. He embodies a passion for life and we wish him well as he builds his brand.”
Mosupye now joins the likes of Sizwe Dhlomo and Nomuzi Mabena who have won the VJ Search competition in previous editions.
“Youth culture is the heartbeat that drives our business. MTV Base remains on trend and continues to nurture fledgling talent into on-screen superstars and we see Tshego as another incredible local success story,” BET vice-president, youth and music for Viacom International Media Networks, Monde Twala said. “Winning the MTV Base VJ Search has already transformed his life and we look forward to his journey in the next year.”
