SAMRO unveils music business course bursary recipients
The Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO) has announced the recipients who applied for its 2022 Music Business Short Learning Programme bursary.
The 50 recipients will be enrolled for the course at Boston City campuses in South Africa from 28 May to 25 July. The bursary scheme aims to introduce musicians to the music business and help them to better navigate the South African music sector. SAMRO will cover the course fees, valued at about R6 000 each.
The course is envisaged to enable the SAMRO members to engage stakeholders in the industry with confidence while establishing sustainable strategies to grow their careers.
“With little to no financial wherewithal to seek the advice of legal, business or industry experts, some of our members and prospective members find themselves at a disadvantaged position when entering into complex contracts with long-term bearing on their ability to realise the full benefits of their work,” SAMRO CEO Mark Rosin said.
“This is because there are limited opportunities for formal training in the business of music. I look forward to a music industry where all musicians have the knowledge to work together on a similar level, and where they can all prosper together.”
SAMRO says Boston City Campus is the best option for the bursary recipients, as the college has a large footprint across South Africa with 50 campuses. The students will also be able to access the coursework online.
Last year, the collective management organisation piloted the bursary programme for 30 of its members.
