Wizkid and Anatii win BET Soul Train Awards
Nigeria's Wizkid and South Africa's Anatii have bagged BET Soul Train Awards for their contributions to Beyoncé's hit song ‘Brown Skin Girl.’
The award ceremony took place at a sound-optimised amphitheatre of the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas at the weekend. After performances from Wale and Luke, 'Brown Skin Girl' was announced as the winner of the Ashford and Simpson Songwriter’s Award 2019, also referred to as Record of the Year.
This comes after its release earlier this year off the soundtrack for Disney's remake of the The Lion King. The film's soundtrack was helmed by Beyoncé who involved some of Africa’s biggest musical acts, including Burna Boy, Yemi Alade and Sarkodie, among others.
Wizkid's performance on the award-winning track, in particular, is a departure from his usual offerings, which rely heavily on familiar melodies, harmonies and non-word vocalisations that his fans have come to know and love.
In 2017, Wizkid received a nomination for the Best Dance Performance Award for his song 'Come Closer' featuring Drake, which was won by Bruno Mars, making the ‘Brown Skin Girl' win his first at the BET Soul Train Awards.
