Uganda: Nyege Nyege announces line-up, new partners
The 2020 edition of Uganda's Nyege Nyege Festival, taking place between 3 and 6 September, will feature virtual and in-person performances.
All the performances will take place on three stages: Tropical Disco Stage, Dark Star Stage and Main Stage.
The physical event is in partnership with Ugandan tech company Innovation Village. The company's mission is to be at the forefront of tech innovations in the region. It will showcase the full festival including the socially distanced 'pandemic disco' as well as immersive VR clubbing.
The event will be broadcast on a newly created digital platform in collaboration with Kenyan tech and innovation company African Digital Art. The platform will provide viewers with a fully immersive 360-degree experience.
Live performers scheduled to take part include Afrigo Band, Jose Chameleon, Cindy, MC Yallah, Nakibembe Embaire Troupe, Watmon Group, Nilotika Cultural Ensemble, Kalalu, Maata and Kadodi Troupe.
The DJs are Kampire, Catu Diosis, Slikback, Decay, Afrorack, Turkana, Authentically Plastic, Don Zilla, Faizal Mostrixx, Rey Sapienz, Hibotep, Chrisman, Candidly Reign, Oyisse, Moroto Heavy Industries, Morghiana HZ and DJ Yan.
More artists are expected to be added to the line-up in the coming weeks. The digital platform and a new venue will be announced at a later date.
"By exploring the hybrid of the physical and the digital we cherish this unique opportunity to explore the full potential of an online component to the festival," Nyege Nyege co-founder Derek Debru told Music In Africa.
"We hope to create a moment that will carry these new connections forward, give more visibility to the collectives involved and build momentum towards more collaborations, solidarity, and of course, amazing music and art."
Launched in 2015, the annual festival curates a unique roster of international and African electro sounds. It typically takes place at the idyllic Nile Discovery Beach in Jinja. In addition, the festival's year-long music residency connects underground musicians from Africa with one another and with producers and musicians beyond the continent.
Tickets for this year's edition will be available to purchase here from 15 July. Connect with Nyege Nyege on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
