Tanzania’s Ali Kiba to headline Koroga Festival
Music lovers in Nairobi will be treated to eclectic performances when the Koroga Festival takes place on Sunday 15 November at the Nairobi Arboretum Gardens. The bi-monthly festival will host Tanzania’s Ali Kiba, Kenya-based Burundian artist Kidum and Kenyan Afro-soul singer Atemi Oyungu.
The Koroga Festival is a great reflection of Kenya’s brilliant and diverse local talent, and attracts leading artists from all over the world through music, fashion, food and arts. In previous editions, international musical sensations including Simphiwe Dana, Baaba Maal, Papa Wemba and Freshlyground have captivated festival goers.
In early 2015, Ali Kiba made a comeback on the music scene with great hits such as ‘Mwana’ and ‘Chekecha Cheketua’ after a deserved break. He was featured on the Coke Studio Africa where he did a mash-up with Kenya's Victoria Kimani. Koroga Festival will thus provide Bongo enthusiasts with a chance to see the artist perform some of his hits that have been enjoying airplay across East Africa.
Fans will also have a chance to listen to Kidum’s music, which captures the everyday happenings in society. Kidum is inspired by nature and his personal experiences, and he uses his music to encourage and enlighten people.
For Afro-soul fans, Atemi will have something special in store for them. The artist, whose latest single ‘Bebi Bebi’ is enjoying considerable airplay on local radio stations, began singing at the early age of 10 in her church choir. Coming from a musical family, she was encouraged to take part in a number of musical projects while in school. At the end of her secondary education, she and a group of friends formed an acapella gospel group called Thrown Together by Christ. Atemi was signed to Pine Creek Records in 2007 and a year later released her debut album, Hatimaye, the product of several years of dedication to her craft. It solidified her position as Kenya's premier Afro- or neo-soul artist. Her widely anticipated sophomore album, Manzili - the State of Life, was released in 2013 to much acclaim. It has been described as her best work yet, owing to the fact that this was the first time that she wrote her own songs. Atemi is also the creator, producer and director of the Kenyan Christmas music festival Tis The Season, which was run successfully in 2013 and 2014. The 2015 edition is much anticipated.
