South Africa: RiSA launches Radio Charts
In mid-December 2021, the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) launched its Radio Charts as an addition to The Official South African Charts (TOSAC), which the body unveiled in September.
Radio Charts provides on a weekly basis the top 200 local and international tracks that have been played on South African radio stations. It also shares the top 100 South African tracks that have been played on radio during that period.
Information for the Radio Charts is aggregated from the Radiomonitor service and is exclusively based on spins across all South African community, commercial, regional, national and public broadcasting stations to determine how the charts stack up.
“It’s an absolute pleasure for us to kick-start the official SA Radio Charts,” RiSA CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi said. “This is the growth we planned for TOSAC as we strive to provide a service to benefit music consumers and artists alike. It is also aimed at driving music consumption and the development of the industry. Radio continues to play a pivotal role as a vehicle to take music to the majority of our people and it was a no-brainer that TOSAC would provide a Radio Charts service.”
Radiomonitor South Africa’s Jarrod Assenheim said: “We are very excited to be the official radio airplay data provider to The Official SA Music Charts. Radiomonitor is the industry standard airplay monitoring service used by labels and organisations around the world. As the leading airplay monitoring company in South Africa, we value our continued partnership with RiSA, labels, publishers, artists, composers, broadcasters and organisations. The launch of an official chart is an important milestone for the local music industry and will provide greater insights for the entire industry.”
Sibisi said that music consumers were spoilt for choice with access to local radio and international music charts. The aim of TOSAC, he added, was to provide a platform that local music lovers could use to reflect their relationship with local and international music.
RiSA says the Radio Charts will be updated every Thursday at noon. “Different versions of a track are aggregated to their corresponding original track, i.e. radio edits, same song with additional featuring artists, DJ remixes (as long as the original artist is credited) and different language/country versions. Album covers are not aggregated to the original track,” a statement reads.
