Downtown Music Hub in Johannesburg, South Africa, is seeking a freelance sound engineer for call-outs.
Established in 1979, the recording studio is supported by the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture and hosts more than 800 recording sessions a year at its three studios. Its services include audio recording, mixing, mastering and editing.
Downtown Music Hub requires more freelance engineers to add onto the company’s list, which currently includes sound professionals such as Mzamo Ndlovu, Siya Masoga and Oyama Songo, who won a Grammy Award in 2018 for the Soweto Gospel Choir’s album Freedom.
Requirements
Applicants should have the following requirements:
- Qualification related to sound/audio or related field is highly recommended and an advantage.
- Proven experience as a sound/audio engineer.
- Great passion for music and audio equipment.
- Technical expertise in sound techniques.
- Experience with sound editing and recording equipment (SSL highly recommended and a major advantage).
- Working knowledge of recording software and hardware.
- Team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to deal with various personalities from colleagues, local and international musicians and recording artists.
- Creativity and attention to detail.
- Excellent hearing and manual dexterity.
- Problem-solving abilities.
Responsibilities
The successful applicants will be responsible for the following job functions:
- Responsible for setting up sound and recording equipment.
- Testing of equipment.
- Operating equipment.
- Make adjustments and testing equipment.
- Assist with recordings or sound productions.
- Prepare sound equipment.
- Setting up sound boards, microphones, amplifiers, audio lines, monitors and speakers or any other equipment needed for a session.
- Technical knowledge is essential.
- Excellent hearing and an eye for detail.
- Repair and maintain faulty equipment (added advantage).
- Constructing cables, repairs and maintenance of consoles, controllers, processors, microphones, etc. (added advantage).
