Deezer launches Remix Lab, allowing fans to create authorised song remixes

Announced on 25 June, the feature enables listeners to modify selected tracks directly within the Deezer app using a range of editing tools. According to the company, artists and rights holders will receive royalties from streams of the remixed versions.

Remix Lab is currently available in France and can be accessed through the pages of participating artists. The initial launch includes music from several French artists, including Celine Dion.

Unlike remix tools offered by some rival streaming services that rely on artificial intelligence, Deezer's feature focuses on in-app editing options. Users can alter elements such as tempo and reverb, while additional tools allow for more extensive changes to a track's style and genre.

Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier said the feature was designed to increase fan engagement while ensuring artists retain control over their work.

“This remix tool perfectly embodies our vision of offering a product that enriches the listening experience for fans by allowing them to participate in the creative process and create a deeper connection with their favourite music directly in the Deezer app,” Lanternier said. “True to our DNA, these features are made possible with full participation of the artists, fully respecting rights, and maximising earnings for each track.”

The launch comes as music streaming companies continue to explore artificial intelligence-driven features and user-generated content. Deezer has taken a different approach by introducing tools that focus on authorised remixing while maintaining artist and rights-holder approval.

The company has also positioned itself as one of the streaming services most actively addressing the growth of AI-generated music. Earlier this year, Deezer introduced technology designed to detect AI-generated tracks on streaming platforms and has made some of those tools available for licensing to other businesses.

In addition, the company has said it excludes AI-generated tracks from its editorial playlists and removes them from recommendation systems in certain cases.

Deezer has not announced a timeline for expanding Remix Lab beyond France, although the company said it plans to make the feature available in additional markets in the future.
