Mike Okri and Skales for Afropolitan Vibes in Lagos
“We are excited because Mike Okri is flying in from the US just to perform at Afropolitan Vibes!” That was a tweet from the Afropolitan Vibes twitter handle last week.
The popular concert, which takes place every month in Lagos, Nigeria, was announcing one of their headliners for the May 2016 show. Mike Okri, a popular artist from the eighties, now living in the US, will be performing at the event, which is scheduled for Friday 20 May.
In his heyday, Okri was famous for such songs as ‘Time na Money’ and ‘Omoge’. Okri’s headlining keeps a pattern that has seen the concert invite such artists working away from Nigeria or the contemporary mainstream music in the country - artists as Shina Peters, Gyedu Blay Ambolley and Daddy Showkey.
Joining Okri will be Skales and Aramide. The rapper and singer Skales released his debut album in 2015. It contained the hit song ‘Shake Body’, which the US singer Alicia Keys is apparently a fan of. He released the video for the song ‘I Want You’ in March. The song is expected to lead to his sophomore album.
Aramide has just released a duet with Adekunle Gold. The singer won the Best Vocal Performance (Female) category for her song ‘Iwo Nikan’ at the 2015 Headies.
Organisers of the concert sent out invitation via social media: "We hope that you will all come join us to party at the 37th edition of Afropolitan Vibes," they announced on Facebook, "where the Bantu collective will perform on stage alongside veteran crooner Mike Okri, rapper/singer Skales and singer/songwriter Aramide."
Previously a free concert, the May 2016 edition of Afropolitan Vibes will be the first edition to charge attendees a gate fee at its usual Freedom Park venue in Lagos. The gate fee is set at 1500 naira ($8).
