Stonebwoy, Koffi Olomide, Shatta Wale win international reggae awards
Three African artists were triumphant at the 2016 International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA.) The ceremony was held on 2 October in the US.
Koffi Olomide, Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy were announced winners in different categories. Shatta Wale won the Best African song category with 'Chop Kiss', while his fellow Ghanaian artist Stonebwoy won the Most Promising Entertainer category—a nomination and win that may cause some concern given Stonebwoy’s accomplished status in his home country.
For his part, Koffi Olomide, who faces a possibly lengthy jailtime for kicking a female dancer, won the award for Best Soukous Song with the track ‘Selfie’.
Nominees such as Wizkid, Flavour and Maitre Gims, were shut out of the list of winners.
The International Reggae and World Music Awards was established in 1982, and aims to acknowledge and honour "the accomplishments and contributions of reggae and world music artists, including: songwriters, performers, promoters and musicians.”
