The Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) is proud to announce its partnership with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) as a Strategic Implementing Partner (SIP) for its Social Employment Fund (SEF). Through this collaboration, MIAF is launching a new national programme designed to create jobs, address skills gaps, and strengthen South Africa’s creative industries — in line with the SEF’s overarching goal to generate work for the common good and build community value through employment, social contribution, and inclusive economic participation. Operating under the banner NEFCISA (National Employment Facility for Creative Industries in South Africa), the initiative will recruit and train participants, match them with host organisations, and place a minimum of 1 000 workers across the country. Key Objectives: Support employment and entrepreneurship in the creative industries. Offer skills development and training programmes. Foster partnerships between public and private creative sectors. Promote South African creativity at both provincial and national levels Foster community development through social contribution.

Music In Africa Gender @ Work is a three-year training programme aimed at upskilling and increasing the participation of female professionals in the African music sector. Launched by the Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) in April 2019, the programme is connected to the MIAF’s ACCES music conference – a pan-African event held in a different African country every year. This connection enables the programme to reach new participants in a different African country every year. The programme marks the beginning of a more concerted effort by the Foundation to support the participation and inclusion of women in all facets of its programmes and the music sector in Africa as a whole. Over the three years, the programme will aim to address gender imbalances in the sector through training, lobbying, facilitating knowledge exchange and dialogues that foster the interest of women. The broader objectives of the programme are to: Provide industry training for women on critical music industry skills, focusing on: Stage management Electronic music production and recording Music business management Technical knowledge Provide an opportunity for both professional and aspiring women to benefit from the Music In Africa network and its broad range of activities in 2019, 2020 and 2021. Provide a solution-based platform in the form of a round table at ACCES with a view to identify challenges, discuss opportunities and lobby for the interests of female practitioners. Offer participants the opportunity to benefit from programmes offered by MIAF’s partners. Increase access to educational materials. Integrate participants in the broader ACCES programme to maximise experience and exposure to the industry. Record and present training materials on the www.musicinafrica.net, including but not limited to tutorials, templates and other best-practice materials. Communicate women-based themes that support the initiatives and messages of the programme. MAIN TRAINING ACTIVITIES Training in first country (Ghana): In the first year, participants will be trained on all aspects of stage management by a team of experienced stage managers from 10 to 17 November 2019. The programme will offer robust classroom training as well as practical, hands-on training in which participants will also be given the opportunity to manage various aspects of the ACCES performance programme. Training in second country: The second training iteration will take place at ACCES 2020 when the programme will diversify its course to include music production lessons and training on other music business topics. A round-table platform will also be introduced to coincide with the ACCES programme. Training in third country: The third training iteration will take place at ACCES 2021 in a different country, offering an advanced course. HOW DO YOU GET INVOLVED?  As a participant, facilitator or trainer: The programme enrolls up to 12 trainees every year. De plus, les industries culturelles et créatives citent régulièrement quatre domaines principaux où l’investissement est nécessaire pour la croissance : une visibilité accrue, la mobilité incluant l’accès à de nouveaux marchés, le financement et les structures de soutien.

MUSIC IN AFRICA LIVE Lancé en 2020 pour une durée de 3 ans, Music In Africa Live est une initiative visant à soutenir l'écosystème de la musique africaine face aux contraintes imposées par la pandémie de COVID-19 ; le projet a été lancé par la Fondation Music In Africa (MIAF) en partenariat avec le ministère fédéral allemand des Affaires étrangères, Siemens Stiftung et le Goethe Institut. Plus de 30 aides sont disponibles dans le cadre de la troisième édition de Music In Africa Live, dans 3 catégories :  showcases, renforcement des compétences et plaidoyer, en conformité avec les modalités énoncées.

The overarching objective of Music In Africa Foundation’s Instrument Building and Repair (IBR) project is to encourage the formalisation and professionalisation of instrument-making and repair in Africa, especially in relation to indigenous African instruments. Background In 2014, the Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) identified as one of its focus areas for development the need to encourage young people from music and music-related sectors to consider instrument-making as a career. This need extended itself from the recognition that the making of traditional African instruments is not a widely practiced skill and seems to be limited to the older generation. Traditional African instrument makers are also few and far between, making communication and logistics between teachers and learners an obstacle. When instrument building workshops take place, budgetary constraints do not allow teachers or learners the time to explore the finer details of an instrument. Based on these observations, the MIAF designed and piloted the first IBR workshop at the Dhow Countries Music Academy (DCMA) in Zanzibar in February 2015. In 2016, the foundation received funding from the South African National Lotteries Commission to implement a much bigger version of the project in Johannesburg. The project drew participants from five African countries. 25 students from South Africa, Ghana, Senegal, Kenya and Ethiopia were trained on how to build and repair musical instruments. The instruments that they made were: Traditional Instruments: Umakhweyana and Marimba Conventional Instrument: Dulcimer guitar The workshop culminated in a traditional instruments concert at the Wits Theatre in Johannesburg. It is the MIAF’s aim to roll out similar workshops in as many African countries as possible over the next few years. Objectives Developing awareness of musical instrument makers in Africa with a view to promote their work to a wider global audience. Facilitating the sharing and transfer of skills in indigenous instruments between countries on the continent. Encouraging the formalisation and professionalisation of instrument-making and repair in Africa, especially in relation to indigenous instruments. Helping instrument makers develop their careers. Fostering the rapid monetisation and sustainable development of instrument-making and repair in Africa. Promoting constant exchange of ideas, expertise, experiences and know-how among instrument makers in Africa. Facilitating the identification of existing gaps in the field with a view to contribute new solutions. Facilitating the transfer of knowledge and skills of indigenous instruments between younger and older generations. 2020 edition The MIAF has also announced that multi-instrumentalist and instrument maker Joe Makhanza will facilitate one of the workshops on the building of the kamale ngoni instrument. Kamale ngoni is a kora-like, stringed instrument that originated in West Africa. The instrument contributed to the rise of Wassoulou music in the 1970s and 1990s. Makhanza was born in Giyani in South Africa's Limpopo province. He completed a bachelor of music degree and a post-graduate diploma in arts marketing from Wits University. He is currently completing his masters in ethnomusicology and is a part-time lecturer in African music studies at Rhodes University. He plays the kora, mbira, valiha, masenqo, xiwewe, ngoni ba and xizambi, among others. He also manufactures the aforementioned instruments. The MIAF will confirm more trainers who will join the workshops as well as the other instruments that will be featured in the 2020 IBR programme.  Apply to participate here. Fondateur du GC3 Labs qui a récemment organisé à Dakar, la première édition du Festival African Music Revolution Tour (11 février 2023), Niccolo Cappon présente dans cet entretien pour Music In Africa sa vision sur l'avenir sur secteur musical africain.

Bonjour Niccolo Cappon, voulez-vous vous présenter à nos lecteurs ?

Bonjour, je suis un entrepreneur italien avec plusieurs années d'expérience dans le secteur de la technologie, des médias et du divertissement.

Après une expérience réussie avec une entreprise technologique, en 2021, avec d'autres investisseurs, j'ai fondé G3C Labs, qui est une entreprise axée sur l'industrie de la musique/divertissement et avec des opérations en Europe, aux États-Unis, au Moyen-Orient et en Afrique.

Qu'est-ce que GC3 Labs et depuis quand a-t-il été créé ?

G3C Labs est une entreprise technologique de pointe, lancée en 2021, opérant au sein de l'industrie de la musique dans deux domaines d'activité principaux : la production de spectacles et/ou la création de contenu multimédia, et la réalité virtuelle/gaming appliqué à la musique.

Notre mission est de fournir aux fans de la musique, une expérience cross-média innovante, amusante et engageante.

Deux ans après sa naissance, G3C Labs a développé d'importants projets internationaux et établi des partenariats stratégiques avec d'importantes plateformes américaines, européennes et africaines.

Quels etaient les ambitions au lancement du projet ?

Notre principale ambition a toujours été de créer de la valeur ajoutée pour les artistes et les fans, grâce à une offre cross-média de haute qualité. Toujours en référence à l'industrie de la musique en Afrique, l'un de nos objectifs depuis le début a été de permettre aux gens du monde entier d'apprécier le talent des artistes africains.

L'Afrique, dans le domaine de la musique, est un vivier incroyable de talents, et il est juste que des gens d'autres pays puissent aussi apprendre à les connaître.

En dehors de l’événementiel, que faites-vous d’autre ?

G3C Labs a une division spécialisé dans le nouveau monde de la réalité virtuelle/métaverse et du gaming. Nous avons développé notre propre plateforme de métaverse/gaming dédiée à la musique et qui sera lancée en avril prochain sur différents marchés (Europe, USA, Moyen-Orient), dont celui africain.

Vous avez, avec la collaboration de LAME Label, organisé la première édition du African Music Tour ; comment avez vous eu l’idée et pourquoi le Sénégal comme pays hôte ?

La vision de l’African Music Revolution Tour est de construire un projet qui, grâce à la musique, contribuera à créer des liens solides entre différents pays, non seulement en Afrique mais dans le monde entier. L'African Music Revolution Tour aspire à réunir des artistes de divers pays africains et à leur donner une visibilité internationale grâce aussi à l'utilisation d'une offre cross-média forte (vidéo, métaverse, etc.).

LAME Label était en totale harmonie avec nous depuis le début, et nous avons très bien travaillé ensemble en intégrant certaines de ses indications artistiques dans notre organisation et notre expérience managériale. Nous sommes heureux d'avoir travaillé avec eux sur cette première étape.

Quant au choix de la première étape, nous avons opté pour Dakar pour plusieurs raisons. Certaines sont de nature opérationnelle et artistique, d'autres, en revanche, sont liées à ce que représentent Dakar et le Sénégal à travers le monde.

Dakar est depuis longtemps devenue la capitale de la culture africaine et le Sénégal est vraiment une pays tourné vers l'avenir, avec de fortes ambitions de se développer et de se positionner comme une référence en Afrique. Nous avons donc pensé que c'était un bon choix de partir de cette belle ville.

Nous avons aussi fortement souhaité que le Monument de La Renaissance était soit le lieu de la première étape de l'African Music Revolution Tour, car c'est vraiment un lieu unique, emblématique, puissant et évocateur.

On a vu que vous travaillez avec de gros partenaires comme QWEST ou encore FanTracks ; quelle est la nature de votre partenariat ?

Nous sommes vraiment honorés que des partenaires internationaux de si haut niveau aient cru en notre projet depuis la première édition.

Qwest TV, co-fondé par le légendaire Quincy Jones, est une plate-forme de diffusion internationale axée sur la musique, présente dans plus de 100 pays. Stage Player + est une plate-forme unique de télévision payante dédiée à l'hébergement d'événements au box-office. Il propose une sélection des plus grands concerts du monde d'Universal Music Group et certains des plus grands spectacles du West End et de Broadway.

Et nous ne pouvons pas oublier de mentionner également FanTracks Digital, un organisateur de spectacles et créateur de contenu américain qui a travaillé avec les meilleurs artistes comme Katy Perry, Guns N' Roses, Janes’ Addiction, Smashing Pumpkins, Goo Goo Dools et bien d'autres plus. Et enfin l'African Union Broadcasting (AUB), qui est présente dans plus de 50 pays africains et qui nous a aidé à diffuser l'événement à travers l'Afrique.

Leur partenariat certifie non seulement la valeur de notre travail, mais nous permet de construire ensemble un projet ambitieux sur le long terme.

Nous avons assisté à une première édition réussie, que prévoyez vous pour la seconde ?

Bien que la première édition ait été un grand défi, car il marquait le lancement du projet avec son format très innovant, nous sommes très satisfaits du résultat.

Pour la deuxième édition, nous avons déjà des idées très claires sur ce que nous voulons améliorer, pour continuer à offrir un spectacle en constante évolution et de haute qualité aux festivaliers.

La deuxième édition ne sera pas seulement une répétition, mais un nouveau show encore plus spectaculaire et engageant pour les fans d'Afrique et du monde entier.

Comptez-vous faire revenir les mêmes artistes ?

Certes de nombreux artistes présents lors de la première édition seront également là lors des éditions suivantes, mais en même temps, nous souhaitons intégrer de nouveaux talents et aussi donner de la visibilité à de nombreux autres artistes africains émanant d'autres pays du continent.

Notre projet vise à construire des relations à long terme avec tous les artistes, pour lesquels les retombées devraient être bonnes.

Comment se fera le choix artistique de la prochaine édition ?

Le choix artistique sera guidé par divers facteurs tels que les profils des artistes, les genres musicaux que nous aimerions avoir, le pays hôte ainsi que les demandes de nos partenaires.

Ce qui est sûr, nous travaillerons à faire de l'African Music Revolution Tour, un véritable succès en Afrique, mais aussi dans le monde.

Quelles sont les ambtions de GC3 LABS en Afrique ?

Nous croyons fermement que l'industrie musicale africaine a un potentiel illimité et c'est pour cette raison que G3C Labs a décidé d'étendre sa présence également au Sénégal et d'être le producteur exécutif de l'African Music Revolution Tour.

Notre objectif est d'offrir une expérience musicale holistique à nos fans, leur permettant de vivre et d'apprécier des spectacles musicaux innovants comme ils ne l'ont jamais fait auparavant.

Qu’est ce que vous voulez que tout le monde sache du GC3 LABS ?

G3C Labs est en Afrique pour investir et construire avec des partenaires solides et internationalement reconnus. Notre travail vise entièrement à construire des relations à long terme sur le continent. Nous croyons fermement que nos compétences, notre expérience et notre professionnalisme peuvent aider à faire exploser l'industrie musicale africaine comme jamais auparavant.

À quand la prochaine étape et où ?

La prochaine étape de l'African Music Revolution Tour aura lieu l'été prochain à Nairobi, au Kenya. Nous voulons également aller en Afrique de l'Est pour continuer à nouer des relations à travers le continent. Ce sera une édition qui sera une continuité de la première mais avec des innovations...
