Rising Tanzanian star Zuchu to launch debut EP
Tanzanian singer Zuchu is preparing for the launch of her debut EP, I Am Zuchu, at Mlimani City in Dar es Salaam on 18 July.
The release will feature seven self-penned songs released on the Wasafi Classic Baby (WCB) record label. The singer is the latest signee of the label, which is co-owned by celebrated Tanzanian artist Diamond Platnumz.
Zuchu launched her foray into the music scene in April 2020 with the single 'Wana', which has so far garnered about 4.5 million views on YouTube. The catchy, mid-tempo song explores the idea of sticking it out and attempting to make a relationship work through all the challenges that may arise.
Zuchu and WCB have been working hard to ensure that the singer's releases get the attention they deserve. Her most recent video 'Nisamehe' was released in May and has received more than 2.5 million views.
She has collaborated with heavyweights like Diamond Platnumz, Mbosso and Khadija Kopa, a revered female Taarab musician who is also her mother.
She received a Silver Play Button from YouTube on 24 June and became the first East African female artist to exceed more than 100 000 subscribers within a week.
She took to social media to thank her fans and her management. "Thank you to all my fans for enabling your girl to receive this award," she wrote. "You made history after I became the first female artist in East Africa to reach 100 000 subscribers within one week. We are now at 200 000 subscribers in under two months. This award is ours."
