Metro FM Music Awards (MMAs)

Metro FM, the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s largest commercial radio station, hosts the annual Metro FM Music Awards (MMAs). The concept has grown to be the second largest music awards show in the country after the SAMAs.

Since their inception in 2001, the Metro FM Music Awards have been hosted by different municipalities, including in Mpumalanga Province. The MMAs are considered to be a key driver of the development of music industry by exposing new talent and working closely with independent and major recording labels, thus becoming one of the major signature events on the South African Music Calendar. The most recent awards took place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Conference Centre (ICC), in Durban on 1 March 2014.

Not only are the MMAs a celebration of the artists but they have matured to become a key driver of local tourism for the hosting province or municipality, contributing significantly towards the economic growth of the hosting cities. In the past years the MMA categories have evolved to reflect the growth of the local music industry at large.
