Call for auditions: ‘The Lion King’ seeks South African singers

The auditions are being hosted by Duma Ndlovu’s company Word of Mouth Pictures, who are looking for talented young singers between the ages of 20 and 30 to audition. It doesn’t matter how little stage or singing experience you have – you simply have to be a great singer.

The upcoming auditions will be held in Johannesburg and Durban. The Joburg auditions will take place on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 August from 9am at the Bassline Hall. They then move to the Sipho Gumede Hall at Durban’s BAT Centre on Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 August.

This year they organisers are looking for performers to travel to Hong Kong, where the show will be staged as part of a festival at Hong Kong’s Disneyland.

A global phenomenon, The Lion King began in 1994 as a Disney animated feature film. This led to numerous sequels, two spin-off TV series, three educational shorts, several video games, countless merchandise and the third longest-running musical in Broadway history, which has so far garnered six prestigious Tony Awards in the US, including Best Musical.

Ndlovu recently announced on his Facebook page:  “It's that time of the year when Word Of Mouth Productions, the official casting agents for Disney's The Lion King, calls on all those interested to come and audition for a chance to go overseas and join one of the world's longest running Broadway productions.

“The Lion King has been running for over 18 years and has over this period featured South African singers in all its productions. This time the Hong Kong production is coming to town to seek more South African talent!”
