Bio
Freed Mushaga, born in Bukavu, in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is a singer, songwriter and lawyer, whose musical style fuses Soul and African Pop. An artist at the crossroads of cultures, he draws inspiration from traditional Congolese sounds while mixing them with contemporary influences, thus creating a unique and universal music, charged with emotion and powerful messages on peace, love, social justice and hope.
Freed is deeply influenced by emblematic figures such as Angélique Kidjo, Michael Jackson, Lokua Kanza, Miriam Makeba, Youssou N'Dour or even the great names of jazz like Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. His electrifying stage energy and refined vocal technique recall these influences, while his suave tone and theatrical performances give him his own artistic identity. Validated by world music giants such as Lokua Kanza and Gérald Toto, he embodies a new generation of committed African artists.
Freed Mushaga made his professional debut in 2020 in Bukavu, where he quickly distinguished himself with performances in prestigious venues such as the French Institute of Bukavu and the Izulu Festival. In October 2021, he performed in front of a national audience at the Halle de la Gombe in Kinshasa, marking a key milestone in his career.
In 2022, his rise accelerated when his project JUAl won the Music In Africa Live Fund, a recognition of his talent and commitment on the continental scene. The same year, he was named among the 100 most influential personalities in South Kivu, thanks to his artistic and social impact. A finalist in the Nigerian competition #SixtyPercentofUs, he conquered an international audience with the hit single COME NOW.
Since 2023, Freed has been expanding his influence in East Africa through notable performances in Kigali, Bujumbura and Kampala, including Sofar Kigali and Kampala, Creative Economy Week, Marahaba Festival and Kalabash Festival. His concerts, such as the "Spiritual Folk-Jazz from Congo" and the "Temporarity Show", have been praised for their emotional intensity and ability to bring together diverse audiences. These events, supported by institutions such as the Alliance Française, demonstrate his commitment to promoting African culture on regional and international stages.
Beyond the stage, Freed Mushaga is a committed leader. Director of the JUA – World Music Meeting regional project, he uses his platform to promote the values of peace, unity and resilience through workshops, masterclasses and conferences. He defines himself as "the voice of hope in the midst of chaos", an artist determined to inspire and unite, even in times of uncertainty.
Signed to East African Records, Freed continues to grow his community, notably through a dynamic digital presence, accumulating over 16,000 followers on his Facebook page. With a career in full expansion and increasingly prestigious performances, Freed Mushaga is establishing himself as one of the rising stars of contemporary African music, ready to conquer the world with his voice and universal message, with more pleasant surprises that promise.
