Freed Mushaga
Bio
Freed Mushaga is a Singer, Songwriter paralegal and dynamic African Soul/Pop artist born in Bukavu, in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. "His vibrant stage presence channels the spirit of Angélique Kidjo, the innovation of Michael Jackson, and the finesse of Lokua Kanza, while his warm, suave tone and theatrical performances carve out a unique artistic identity. Deeply influenced by Congolese traditions and global icons like Miriam Makeba, Youssou N'Dour and Jonathan Butler, Freed weaves together Soul, African Pop, Jazz, and traditional folk to create a powerful and universal organic sound, charged with emotion and social relevance"
Freed’s artistry is rooted in the storytelling traditions of African griots and shaped by the chaotic beauty and defiant hope of his homeland. From the heart of conflict-ridden Bukavu, he transforms personal and collective struggle into music that radiates resilience, love, justice, and unity. Since his professional debut in 2020, Freed has captivated audiences with standout performances at the Institut Français of Bukavu, Kinshasa’s Halle de la Gombe, and leading regional stages including Sofar Sounds, Alliance Française Kampala's Akatuuti, Afrozilla Festival, Kalabash Festival, Geco Café and Marahaba Festival.
His performance resume also includes Carnivore Kenya shows alongside incredible kenyan singers Brian Sigu and Costar Ojwang, The Mist, UMP festival - Evolution, his several "SONIG NIGHT" shows at Encanto Kampala, as well as his appearance at the Kilele Summit 2025. Through these, he has earned acclaim for his ability to blend intensity with intimacy, moving seamlessly between deeply personal storytelling and energetic, audience-inclusive experiences.
In 2022, his project JUA earned the Music In Africa Live grant, and his hit single COME NOW gained international traction as a finalist in Nigeria’s #SixtyPercentOfUs challenge. That same year, he was recognized among the 100 Most Influential Personalities in South Kivu, affirming his growing artistic and civic influence.
Currently part of East African Records collective, Freed continues to build momentum across East Africa with memorable shows in Kampala, Kigali, Bujumbura, and Nairobi. His upcoming EP, "JE SUIS", releasing on May 9th, is one of his most anticipated works to date—a poetic and playful fusion of Soul, Jazz, Folk, and Afrobeats born from a place of personal truth and cultural defiance. The 4 tracks-project explores themes of identity, resilience, childhood innocence, self-awareness, and the unrelenting power of love.
Beyond the stage, Freed Mushaga is an active member of the global music collective Beyond Music, and has been recently spotlighted as MCM by Anyiko Public Relations and featured by Afrikaloud (Kenya) for his role in shaping the sound of modern Africa (April 2025). He also serves as Director of the JUA – World Music Meeting, through which he leads workshops, masterclasses, and cross-border cultural projects that elevate African unity and expression using music.
Validated by legendary artists such as Lokua Kanza and Gérald Toto, Freed Mushaga continues to shine as one of Africa’s most compelling and committed voices—a soulful storyteller transforming chaos into harmony, and songs into healing.
