Chocolate City gets new president
Nigeria’s Chocolate City record label has appointed a new president for its Choc Boi Nation arm.
Chocolate City made the announcement yesterday after posting a notice for its social media followers about a new development.
“Congratulations @DJLambo_ on your appointment as President Choc Boi Nation,” the label said through its Twitter handle. “We believe in your commitment and ability to lead.”
The message was accompanied by a video showing new president DJ Lambo making a mock elaborate acceptance of her position, which ended with a brief dance.
DJ Lambo (real name Olawunmi Okerayi) refers to herself as “Nigeria's foremost female DJ” and has been with the Chocolate City since 2015, when she moved from subsidiary label Loopy Records, where she led for two years. The daughter of a DJ, she has often spoken about being influenced by her father, despite studying English and literature at university and contemplating to become a writer.
Over the past few years, Chocolate City has undergone several changes. In 2015, rapper MI Abaga was named CEO of Chocolate City Music, replacing Audu Maikori, the lawyer and entrepreneur who led the label for 10 years. Maikori promptly became the president of the overseeing Chocolate City Group. Last year, the label acquired labels run by Ice Prince and Jesse Jagz, following rumours of both artists exiting the group.
Chocolate City Music posted a message via social media, “raising its glasses” to DJ Lambo upon making “history as the first female president.”
