Top African artists nominated for BET Awards 2022
African musicians including Nigeria’s Wizkid, Tems and Fireboy DML, South Africa’s Major League DJz and the DRC’s Fally Ipupa were named among the nominees for the 2022 BET Awards at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on 26 June.
Tems scored three nominations, including Best Collaboration alongside Wizkid for the remix of ‘Essence’, Best International Act and Best New Artist. Wizkid was nominated in the Best International Act category, which Burna Boy won last year, as well as the Best Male R&B/Pop Artist category.
Other African nominees in the category are Fally Ipupa, Fireboy DML, Major League DJz and British-Nigerian rapper Little Simz. They face competition from Dave (UK), Dinos (France), Ludmilla (Brazil) and Tayc (France).
Meanwhile, US rapper Doja Cat leads the pack with six nods. Ari Lennox and Drake following closely at four nominations each.
Last month, the BET Awards announced that actress and singer Taraji P Henson will host the awards for a second time.
“I am honoured to return as the host of the BET Awards and share the stage with so many powerful and prolific artists; you can even say it is the ‘empire’ of black excellence,” Henson said. “Working with amazing partners like Scott and Connie at BET and Jesse Collins Entertainment is a creative’s dream. I can’t wait to celebrate black music, entertainment and culture with our viewers on what will be one unforgettable night.”
The BET Awards were first held in 2001 to celebrate black entertainers in music, film and sports. This year’s nominees were selected by BET’s voting academy, which is composed of industry professionals from various fields.
