Sony Music signs Tanzanian singer Abby Chams
Tanzanian newcomer Abby Chams has signed a record deal with Sony Music Entertainment Africa.
The deal, announced on 8 June, is expected to unlock the full potential of the multitalented 19 year old.
“I feel blessed and honoured to be one of the performing female artists representing Africa on a major label,” Abby Chams said. “This is a dream come true, a manifestation of sorts. It is a testament to my faith and hard work. The world is about to get the Abigail experience.”
Sony Music East Africa boss Christine Mosha welcomed the artist to the label and said it was time time for the world to experience her talent.
Abby Chams, who started learning piano when she was five and mastered the violin by eight, is also an outstanding guitarist, drummer and flautist. She has collaborated with top Tanzanian stars like Rayvanny, Darassa and Rosa Ree. She has also worked with foreign artists such as James Nee (Malawi), Jimmy D Psalmist (Nigeria) and Jekalyn Carr (US).
The singer, who won the Outstanding Youth in Entertainment Award at the 2021 Tanzania Emerging Youth Awards, is also one of the country’s biggest influencers. In 2020, UNICEF selected her to be a youth advocate on mental health and gender equality in Tanzania. She is also an ambassador for the Tanzania Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture.
The signing comes days after the record company signed Tanzanian rapper Young Lunya.
“I come from a part of the region where even talking about major labels was a myth and a dream,” he said. “So to see one of my biggest dreams come true has just been such a blessing and an honour. I am more excited that I am signed to Sony Music because they represent some of the biggest artists that I admire like ASAP Rocky, Future, Travis Scott and many others.”
