Kenya: King Kanja hints at Self Made interview
US-based Kenyan artist King Kanja has hinted that he may soon feature in celebrity video interview series Self Made hosted by Sovereign Brands’ president and CEO Brett Berish.
Last month, King Kanja met with Berish at the company’s New York headquarters, with the artist’s publicist revealing that a Self Made interview is on the cards.
The family-owned Sovereign Brands – housing beverages like Luc Belaire, Bumbu Rum, McQueen and the Violet Fog and Villon – has been supporting King Kanja for the past two years.
Berish’s self-made success has informed his company’s values, culture and celebrity partnerships, culminating in Sovereign’s prolific marketing campaign ‘Self Made Tastes Better’, which includes a series of interviews with some of the world’s biggest celebrities hosted by Berish. They range from recording artists to athletes, actors, TV personalities and influencers.
In the video series, Berish talks with the celebrities to discuss the process of building their careers from the ground up. He has highlighted the journeys of artists such as Rick Ross, DJ Khaled, Post Malone, Steve Aoki, Nipsey Hussle, Dave East, Diamond Platnumz, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, Russ and Rapsody, among others.
During the New York meeting, Berish revealed to King Kanja why Africa is key to him: “I want to support artists and connect them with our international artists’ family, as I want to see more collaborations this way. We want to do huge things in Africa.”
King Kanja said: “He [Berish] is a great guy with great energy and has a strong passion and connection with Africa. He is also a generous human that is eager to help one reach whatever goal they want. Upon meeting him, I mentioned to him that I had my eyes set on collaborating with Rick Ross and he immediately made a phone call to try and make it happen. A few days later after meeting with Brett, I was able to meet Rick Ross the following weekend in Tampa, Florida, where I was doing a show with Bobby V, and, coincidentally, he was on the same line-up for an outdoor concert. Nothing is concrete, but a big collaboration is in the works. We’ll see what happens.”
King Kanja is also finalising his fifth studio album KanJAh. His discography has consistently grown over the past years, having released two successful EPs, Vibes (2017) and Muchoki (2019), as well as the Vibe Lord (2020) and Vibrations (2020) albums. One of the lead singles off the upcoming project, ‘Because of You’, is produced by Houston-based Kenyan producer Giggz who recorded Tems’ vocal part on Wizkid’s ‘Essence’.
